Angelique Kerber Focused on First Round Match at French Open

Angelique Kerber is heading into the French Open with her full focus on her first round match. Before her opening match in Paris on Tuesday, the three-time Grand Slam winner wants to focus exclusively on her opponent Arantxa Rus.

However, she is not wasting any thought on the possible second-round duel with world number four and former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan – allegedly because she doesn’t know anything about it yet.

“I know who I’m playing against in the first round and that’s enough. I don’t even want to know about the second round,” Kerber said in a media round on Saturday and asked not to receive the information either. “Even if it’s difficult, it doesn’t matter. Because I showed in Rome that I can keep up with an Iga (Swiatek, ed.).”

At the Masters in Rome, Kerber showed significantly improved form on the unpopular clay court. It was only in the round of 16 that she lost in two sets to world number one Swiatek from Poland after a strong match.

After her comeback after maternity leave almost half a year ago, it was the first time that Kerber had presented herself in a duel with a top player almost on an equal level.

“Rome went quite well, I felt good from round to round. But now before Paris everything is back to zero,” said Kerber: “I think I’m on the right track now, but I still have a few percent room for improvement.”
