The national team has to do without the suspended defender Jan Rutta in the final of the World Cup against Switzerland. The Czech back ended the one-match stoppage time for a foul elbow on Isac Lundeström.

The disciplinary commission of the championship decided on the additional punishment. The incident occurred in the 35th minute of Saturday’s semi-final against Sweden, when Rutta elbowed an opponent in the face in the corner behind his own goal.

The referees consulted among themselves, but did not send the Czech defender off the ice. “I was looking at it, but the footage we had was such that it couldn’t quite be seen. So I really don’t know, but I know that something happened there,” said coach Radim Rulík in the mix zone.

The tournament directorate suspended Rutt’s activities for one match. “The player extended his elbow away from his body to touch and recklessly threaten a Swedish opponent,” the IIHF said in a statement.

“Furthermore, the commission ruled that the hit was made on a player without possession of the puck. Rutta clearly separated his arm from his body and elbowed his opponent, who was unaware of it and could not defend himself in any way, in the head.
