Alexa Moreno, the Mexican gymnast who broke with aesthetic schemes in her sport and who faced bullying Due to prejudices about her body, she was now the inspiration for a model of the Barbie doll, a brand that for decades imposed beauty stereotypes far from reality.

Seeing a Barbie made in my likeness makes me feel that I have done well, that I was able to motivate other people to do something great, it is a great responsibility. I like success stories, of characters who get back up after every fall. The best thing is not to be afraid to dream and go for it, Moreno said in a video on social networks.

When she performed at the 2016 Olympic Games, she also faced criticism of her body. She was one of the top representatives of national gymnastics and had an appropriate weight for the discipline, however, users on social networks attacked her for supposedly not fitting with the aesthetic patterns of that sport, where they were used to seeing much thinner bodies. .

However, Moreno later responded with medals at the world and Pan American gymnastics championships, so he is now preparing to compete in Paris 2024, which will also mark his retirement.

The Barbie doll went from being one of the best-selling toys, but it also imposed stereotypes of women’s beauty – with its very thin, blonde and blue-eyed figure – which caused it to lose followers in the last two decades precisely because it did not represent the real diversity of the female body.

Now, in an attempt to recover that marketing reach, it has sought to include that diversity in its advertising models and premises, just as it did last year with the film Barbie.

Taking advantage of the proximity of the Olympic Games, the Mattel brand presented a collection inspired by female athletes, which includes former tennis player Venus Williams, seven-time women’s champion. Grand Slam and who also faced episodes of racism.

Soccer players Christine Sinclair and Mary Fowler, boxer Estelle Mossely, gymnast Rebeca Andrade, swimmer Federica Pellegrini and sprinter Ewa Swoboda were also models for this collection. In addition to Moreno, former diver Paola Espinosa and racquetball player Paola Longoria are athletes who received a tribute from the brand in previous years.
