Al Arabi Basketball Team: A Legacy of Success in Qatar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Al Arabi Basketball Team (فريق العربي لكرة السلة in Arabic), is a professional basketball club based in the city of Doha, capital of Qatar, which is part of the Al-Arabi Sports Club multi-sports club, active in various sports such as football, volleyball, handball and others. The team takes part in the highest national competition, the Qatari Basketball League.[1]

The team plays its home matches at the Al Arabi Indoor Arena, a facility that can accommodate up to 1,000 spectators.

Al-Arabi was born as a multi-sports club and was founded in 1952 under the name “Al-Tahrir”, making it the second oldest team in Qatar[2]. In 1970 the basketball section was opened, which became one of the founding teams of the Qatari Basketball League in the 1981-1982 season. Al-Arabi managed to establish itself in the inaugural season of the championship, becoming the first team to win the national title; the team, in addition to that first season, also won the Qatari Basketball League title in the following four seasons (1982-1983, 1983-1984, 1984-1985, 1985-1986) and then won two further national titles in the 1991 seasons -1992 and 1993-1994. These successes, in the first decade of the Qatari Basketball League, made the team one of the most important in the nation; but between the end of the nineties and the beginning of the new millennium it experienced a period of decline and poor results[3].

In the 2017-2018 season, Al-Arabi, led on the pitch by the Americans William Byrd and Nick Stover, and on the bench by the Tunisian Hatem Mamlouk, finished the regular season in second place and after having passed the semi-finals, reached the final for the title, where they beat Al-Wakra SC with a score of 61-59. The victory allowed Al-Arabi to win the eighth title in its history and return to celebrate the victory of the Qatari Basketball League after twenty-four years of waiting[4].

Al-Arabi returned to success again in the Qatari Basketball League at the end of the 2023-2024 season, thanks to the victory, 68 to 61, obtained in the final against Al-Ahli Doha, thus winning their ninth national title; in the same season the team also won the Qatari Basketball Cup, again beating Al-Ahli Doha in the final, this time with a result of 80-73, winning the double[5].
