New York police released surveillance photos of the alleged attacker, a bearded man wearing a baseball cap, blue T-shirt and black sweatpants. Buscemi, a former FDNY firefighter, has a film career that spans four decades and includes roles in award-winning films such as Fargo and Reservoir Dogs.

The attack occurred shortly before midday: according to a worker in the area who witnessed the incident, the actor was walking down the street with a woman, then she saw him fall backwards and then run in the opposite direction. Curiously (and sadly), Steve Buscemi is the second Boardwalk Empire star to have been attacked in recent months: Michael Stuhlbarg, his colleague on the series, was attacked and hit in the back of the head by a rock last March.
