2nd Bundesliga: VfL Osnabrück and Schalke 04 have to play in St. Pauli

The second division game between VfL Osnabrück and Schalke 04 cannot take place as planned on Saturday due to structural defects in the roof structure of the stadium in Osnabrück. The German Football League (DFL) canceled the game. Instead, the game should take place on Tuesday in the Millerntor Stadium of second division leaders FC St. Pauli, the DFL said.

“The new appointment was made after hearing from both clubs in agreement with FC St. Pauli, the media partner Sky and the security authorities,” said the DFL. Both twelfth-placed Schalke and bottom-placed Osnabrück are still fighting to stay in the second division.

The city of Osnabrück had previously ordered a so-called enforceable cease and desist. Structural defects in the roof structure of the Osnabrück home stadium are a safety risk. It then became clear “that a short-term repair of the structural defects and thus the timely staging of the game in the Bremer Brücke stadium cannot be guaranteed,” wrote the DFL.

The Gelsenkirchen club, which was relegated from the Bundesliga last season, reacted with satisfaction to the DFL decision. Schalke thanked their rivals St. Pauli and the DFL, “who followed the Royal Blues’ wish to have at least three days of preparation and regeneration time before the home game against Hansa Rostock (May 11th)”. Then Schalke plays the penultimate league game of the season on matchday 33. The club rejected the initially expected rescheduling of the game against Osnabrück to a time between the 33rd and 34th matchdays. VfL Osnabrück has not yet officially commented on the rescheduling of the game.
