2024 NBA Draft Lottery Results: Atlanta Hawks Secure No. 1 Pick, Detroit Pistons Lose Big

That’s it, the order of the 2024 NBA Draft is set. After Sunday’s lottery, the Atlanta Hawks regained the first pick, even though they had only a 3% chance of obtaining such a gain. The Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs rounded out the top four. For their part, the Detroit Pistons, the Charlotte Hornets and the Portland Trail Blazers lose big.

If the 2024 Draft seems less prestigious than that of 2023, due to the non-presence of a player as promising as Victor Wembanyama, recovering the first draft choice remains a precious sesame despite everything. The lottery thus decided to reward the Atlanta Hawks, who defied all predictions to land the No. 1 pick, followed by the Wizards, the Rockets and the Spurs. While this year’s crop may not be considered the best draft class in NBA history, there are always diamonds in the rough to be found, and some teams will have a better chance of extracting them than others.

Detroit loses big

Indeed, among the franchises which will have to wait longer than expected before being able to express themselves on the evening of the Draft, we find the Detroit Pistons, big losers of the lottery… Three seasons, a total of 54 victories, and only three choices n °5 to sink your teeth into. For the third year in a row – and the second in a row in which they posted the worst record in the league – the Pistons fell outside the top four in the lottery. This season was particularly dreadful, ending with a franchise record 68 losses, including the longest single-season losing streak in NBA history at 28 games.

Atlanta, big winner!

Already expected to shake things up this summer, the Hawks front office now has even more options after winning the No. 1 pick in the lottery for the first time in franchise history, despite the few 3 % chance of achieving this. Armed with two potentially valuable business assets in the person of Trae Young et Dejounte Murrayas well as first draft pick, Atlanta general manager, Landry Fields, will have his work cut out for him to make the right choices for the next financial year. In short, after a disappointing season in Atlanta, hope is reborn.
