“I am sure that I will return to the bench, I would like to train again,” said Zinédine Zidane when asked about his future a few weeks ago during a game with Juventus Turin’s traditional team. Although the 51-year-old, who has been without a club for three years, is said to have played a subordinate role in the search for a coach at FC Bayern, not least because of the language problems, the record champions seem to have changed their mind – according to the Spanish newspaper “Marca”. Munich officially asked the Frenchman.

Accordingly, the Bundesliga club contacted the Frenchman’s advisor “in the last few days” to find out Zidane’s willingness to take on a job again in the summer – and at the same time to officially register their interest in working together. Most recently, at the end of March, there was speculation that Zidane could take over the position of head coach in Munich alongside compatriot and former national team colleague Franck Ribéry. The latter had recently given up his job as a technical trainer at the Serie A club US Salernitana in Italy and has long been considered a candidate for a position in Munich, but more in the youth sector.

During his two terms at Real Madrid between 2016 and 2021, Zidane won the Spanish championship twice and the Champions League three times and was named World Club Coach of the Year twice. Most recently, national coach Julian Nagelsmann and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi were considered favorites to succeed Thomas Tuchel on Säbener Straße. “We are really doing our job. And I know that everyone cares, but it’s not yet to the point where you can say you can be more offensive. We check, we examine, we are clear about what we want and try to implement it,” Bayern’s sports director Max Eberl recently said with regard to the search for a coach.

Sports director Christoph Freund said after the 2-0 win in the Bundesliga against 1. FC Köln on Saturday about the status of the coaching search and a possible schedule: “There is no deadline.”
