During the night from Monday to Tuesday, a young man was violently attacked in Grande-Synthe, near Dunkirk, in the North. Hospitalized with a life-threatening prognosis, he succumbed to his injuries Tuesday evening. Since then, the investigation has led to the arrest of two minor suspects. According to the Dunkirk public prosecutor’s office, in charge of the investigation, the attack took place during the night from Monday to Tuesday, around 2 a.m., in the parking lot of a supermarket in Grande-Synthe. Informed by a witness, it was the firefighters who arrived first on site before calling the police. A 22-year-old young man living in the town was lying on the ground, unconscious, his face covered in wounds. He was hospitalized in intensive care at the Dunkirk hospital center with a life-threatening prognosis. He died a few hours later, Tuesday evening.
In several media, there was discussion of the weapons used by the attackers: baseball bat, iron bar or even machete. To 20 Minutes, the Dunkirk prosecutor explains that an autopsy will be carried out: “Only this expertise by a forensic doctor will make it possible to determine with certainty the nature of the blows suffered and the possible use of weapons, use for the moment not confirmed. »
The investigation is progressing quickly
The Dunkirk public prosecutor’s office immediately opened an investigation for “attempted intentional homicide by an organized gang” before reclassifying it as “murder by an organized gang” after the death of the victim.
Judicial police investigators arrested two suspects. A first, Wednesday morning, aged 14. A second, Wednesday afternoon, aged 15. Both are currently in police custody, which has been extended for the first arrested.
Based on testimonies, the Dunkirk prosecutor specified that “the acts could have been committed by at least three individuals”.
The reasons for this attack
The Dunkirk public prosecutor’s office did not elaborate on the motivations of the attackers, specifying to 20 Minutes that “the motive and the mode of operation also remain to be clarified”.
Several sources nevertheless evoke the villainous motive. To AFP, a police source reported testimony indicating that the attackers stole the victim’s cell phone. There was also talk of a false meeting set up via a dating site by the attackers for the victim.
For his part, the mayor of Grande-Synthe described another case of assault, which occurred a few days earlier in his town. If he leaves it to the police to make a possible connection between the two cases, he nevertheless points out similarities between them. “The possible connection with previous facts cannot be reliably confirmed at this stage,” however, insists the Dunkirk public prosecutor’s office.
