Oswaldo Cabrera hit a two-run homer and the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 on Saturday to tie the best start to a season in their history.
The team is 11-3 this season, including seven wins in eight road games.
The Yankees and the Guardians will face each other again in the evening. The match was originally scheduled to be played on Friday, but rain pushed it back to Saturday evening.
The Yankees have started a campaign 11-3 on 11 other occasions, most recently during the 2010 season.
Starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt (1-0) gave up just one run in five-plus innings of work in the victory. Caleb Ferguson pitched for one inning, Ian Hamilton took the mound for two and Clay Holmes finished the job in the ninth inning.
The Guardians only had five hits.
Cabrera hit his third home run of the season, in the sixth inning against Nick Sandlin. His strike gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead.
Carlos Carrasco (0-1) allowed a run to the Yankees in four and two-thirds innings of work. He also allowed five walks.
