“Xabi is Bavaria’s biggest problem”

For former Bundesliga striker Nils Petersen, Bayer Leverkusen with Xabi Alonso is a permanent title candidate. For FC Bayern, the Spaniard is “the biggest problem”.

If FC Bayern fails to win the Champions League, the club would face its first titleless season since the 2011/12 season. Back then in the Bayern squad: Bundesliga top joker Nils Petersen. In his Kicker column he explains why he doesn’t believe that FC Bayern will get rid of Bayer Leverkusen so quickly, why the “Werkself” should now be called the “Werkszwölf” – and why he, above all, keeps his fingers crossed for Harry Kane.

According to Petersen, Alonso has what it takes to make Leverkusen a permanent title candidate: “Bayern’s biggest problem for the next league season is once again: Xabi Alonso! On the one hand, they won’t get him, on the other hand, what’s more dangerous, he makes the former “Vizekusen” a permanent contender for the title.

Alonso’s appearance is something very special for the former Freiburger: “Because of his presence, you should be writing about the Werkszwölf by now. I’m impressed by his decision not to pack his bags.”

And further: “He is building something on the Rhine, wants to gain more experience, still sees potential for improvement: Bayern have to fear again – and hope. FCB is loved or hated, everyone loves Leverkusen now. Who is responsible for this? Si, senor! This season shows what is possible when the ringmaster and his artists form a unit in the ring.”

The Spaniard recently confirmed that he would not be leaving the Bundesliga and Leverkusen after the season.

That’s why Petersen is keeping his fingers crossed for Kane

Petersen remained without a title in his only season at Bayern, which is another reason why he is keeping his fingers crossed for Kane. He jokingly talks about his special position: “I share the principle of hope with all Bayern fans. “Hopefully Harry Kane will grab the Champions League trophy – and won’t challenge my unique selling point.”

The current “messed up season” could also be a new spark for Petersen. After the titleless 2012 season, Bayern won the treble under Jupp Heynckes and the German championship eleven times in a row. He doesn’t want to give up the Champions League title yet: “Hope dies last. At Bayern it’s all too often a case of “hoping” at the top level lately. If only half of the team pushes to the limit, they win against 13 league rivals. And deliver a decent performance like in London. Let’s hope for a second leg with enough limit players.”

On Wednesday (9 p.m. in LIVETICKER) the Munich team will face Arsenal FC in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
