Wout van Aert Takes First Bike Ride Outside After Horror Crash

Three weeks after his horror crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen, in which he suffered multiple fractures, Wout van Aert took a bike ride outside for the first time. He proudly and happily shows off his new bike, but apologizes for the “spacers” on his handlebars.

On March 27, Wout van Aert broke his collarbone, sternum and several ribs. A week later he went for a walk outside for the first time, and today he went out into the world on a bicycle for the first time.

The unfortunate leader of Visma-Lease a Bike shared on Strava a trip of 30 km in just over an hour in the area around his hometown.

He showed off his new bike: a “full suspension” mountain bike with a spring under the front fork and under the saddle, the new standard in mountain biking.

For extra comfort, there were “spacers” under his stem, which are roundels that make it possible to raise the handlebars.

That immediately forced him to make an apology. Van Aert apologized to all his colleagues “who he had ever given shit to because they had spacers under their stem”.

There is no more information about the timing of his rehabilitation. Last week Van Aert announced that he will not ride the Giro. It starts on May 4, just like the Tour and Roubaix, the Tour of Italy was a main goal that went wrong.
