Wout van Aert has made himself heard for the first time via Instagram, a week and a half after his heavy crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen. “I hope to be back on my bike soon, but at the moment I am fully focusing on my recovery,” he says from his holiday resort in Knokke-Heist.

Wout van Aert desperately wanted to shine in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix this year, but the Visma | Lease a Bike was involved in a serious crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen four days before the Flemish High Mass. He suffered fractures to his collarbone, sternum and ribs. Later a bruised lung was also revealed.

And so Van Aert faces a rehabilitation period, but how is the Belgian doing now? “Nine days after my operation, I’m starting to feel like my old self again,” Van Aert writes on Instagram. “I hope to be back on my bike soon, but at the moment a full recovery of my wounds and bones is the absolute priority.”

“I am grateful for the extra time with my loved ones. I would like to thank everyone who took care of me after my fall: my wife, children, family, the team, the doctors, the nurses, the therapists…” Van Aert has also been showered with heart-warming messages in recent days. “I have never received more messages, gifts or emails. As a result, I now laugh more and suffer less. Thanks a lot!”

Return
It is not yet known when Van Aert can train fully again and wear a shirt number. According to reports from Het Laatste Nieuws, Van Aert’s recovery is going so well that even the Giro d’Italia (starting on Saturday, May 4) would still be an option for the Belgian classic driver. In that case it could ‘grow in the round’.
