Wout van Aert can take a walk again: “To stand still is to go backwards”

A week after his heavy fall in Dwars door Vlaanderen, Wout van Aert has made serious physical exertion for the first time. The battered leader of Visma | Lease a Bike, who broke his sternum, collarbone and several ribs, has on training app Strava let us know that he went for an hour’s walk.

These are the first signs of recovery for Van Aert, who had surgery the morning after his crash and has since been recovering at home. Last week he posted some photos on Instagram, including an Easter breakfast on the morning of the Tour of Flanders, which he had to miss due to his fall.

But Van Aert is certainly not sitting still. Under the motto ‘to stand still is to go backwards’, he walked 3.9 kilometers in just under an hour on Wednesday morning near his hometown of Herentals. Cycling is not an option for WVA for the time being, which will have to recover for some time to be fit for competition again.

According to reports from Het Laatste Nieuws on Tuesday, Van Aert’s recovery is going so well that even the Giro d’Italia (starts on Saturday, May 4) would still be an option for the Belgian classic driver. In that case it could ‘grow in the round’.
