With Bjarne Geiss and Jan Colin Voelker, the last German men were eliminated in the round of 16 at the European Badminton Championships in Saarbrücken on Thursday. On Friday only Isabel Lohau and Linda Efler will be holding the German flag high.

No chance for the German badminton men at the home European Championships in the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken: The last representative’s final stop was in the round of 16 on Thursday.

Bjarne Geiss and Jan Colin Volker were clearly inferior to the two Frenchmen Eloi Adam and Leo Rossi. They lost 0:2 (16:21, 12:21).

Roth loses to Lanier

Fabian Roth had previously lost 0-2 in the singles against Frenchman Alex Lanier (21:23, 11:21). The first set was closely fought, towards the end the 28-year-old from Karlsruhe was unable to use a set point when the score was 21:20. Lanier equalized and took the set.

In the second round, the Frenchman took the lead right from the start and gradually extended it. After 46 minutes of total playing time, he converted his first match point.

The originally planned second men’s doubles between Mark Lamsfuß and Marvin Seidel from Saarbrücken on the one hand and the two Scots Christopher and Matthew Grimley was canceled due to Lamsfuß’s cancellation of the tournament due to illness.

Lohau/Efler in the quarterfinals

Things looked a little better on the German side for the women. In the doubles, Isabel Lohau from Saarbrücken and Linda Efler from Mühlheim an der Ruhr defeated the Austrians Serena Au Yeong and Katharina Hochmeir 2-0 (21:12, 21:10).

Miranda Wilson from SG Schorndorf lost her singles match against Turkish Arin Neslihan 0:2 (14:21, 18:21). The 24-year-old was the only German in the women’s singles after top player Yvonne Li, like Mark Lamsfuß, withdrew from competing due to knee problems with a view to the Olympic Games in Paris.

In doubles, Julia Meyer and Leona Michalski lost 0:2 (13:21, 8:21) against the Dutch Debora Jille and Cheryl Seinen.

This is how it continues

Lohau and Efler, who both play at BC Bischmisheim, are the last two of the original 17 Germans in the tournament. They have to play against the two Bulgarians Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva in the quarter-finals on Friday evening. The latter are in third place. They reached the quarter-finals with a 2-0 (21:15, 21:8) against the Spaniards Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez.
