Virginia Tech Football Coach Brent Pry Adds Three New Coaches to Staff

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry has announced three new additions to his coaching staff. Former Tech receiver Cam Phillips and Brayden DeVault-Smith have been added as graduate assistants, while Mike Moyseenko, a 16-year coaching veteran, has been hired as an offensive analyst.

Phillips (Laurel, Md., DeMatha HS) played receiver for the Hokies from 2014-17 where he played in 52 games, starting 44, following a successful high school career at DeMatha High School in Maryland, where he played three seasons for Hokies’ running backs coach Elijah Brooks. Phillips is the Hokies’ the all-time leader in receptions (236) and receiving yards (3,027). He was the MVP of the 2016 Belk Bowl, with 6 receptions for 115 yards in the 35-24 win over Arkansas. During the 2017 season, Phillips set a school record 14 receptions against East Carolina including three touchdowns.

Phillips had a brief stint in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills before spending the 2020 season in the XFL with the Houston Roughnecks, finishing the season with 31 receptions for a league high 455 yards and 9 touchdowns. He played the last three seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts, winning the Grey Cup in 2022, recording 38 receptions and three touchdowns on the year.

DeVault-Smith (Nashville, Tenn., Pearl-Cohn HS) spent the 2023 season as a defensive graduate assistant at UT Martin, primarily working with the defensive backs.

He joined the Skyhawks following a playing career which featured stops at Vanderbilt and Samford. During the 2022 season, he wrapped up his career by appearing in all 12 games for Samford, tallying 40 total tackles. At Vanderbilt, DeVault-Smith spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons under the tutelage of Hokies’ linebackers coach and defensive coordinator Chris Marve. In four seasons with the Commodores, he played in 32 games, recording 57 career tackles while tallying 5.0 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Moyseenko (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown HS) will be involved in film study, data analysis as well as scouting and game planning. He spent the 2023 season as the Hamilton College offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was the passing game coordinator and running backs coach at Lehigh University in 2022 where the Mountain Hawks were third in the Patriot League with 222 passing yards per game.

Moyseenko was the quarterbacks coach and offensive play caller at the University of Connecticut during the 2019 and 2021 seasons. In 2018 he assisted the offensive coordinator as the offensive quality control coach.

From 2013 to 2017, Moyseenko served as an assistant coach at Towson University tutoring the wide receivers for four seasons, coaching five all-conference receivers. In 2013, Moyseenko worked alongside current Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen, who was the Tigers’ tight ends coach. Towson finished the season with a 13-3 record and played in the FCS Championship.

Moyseenko also had assistant coaching stints with Shepherd University, the Baltimore Mariners of the American Indoor Football Association and Good Counsel High School.

Moyseenko walked on as a quarterback at the University of Maryland and was on the roster for two seasons. He was a student assistant coach his last two years at Maryland, graduating in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Mike and his wife Kerrie have three children, Alison, Evan, and Tessa.
