Vienna Metrostars Sweep Doubleheader against Schwechater in BBL Action

But first things first: Thierry Letouzé and Omar Duenas started the first regular home game against Schwechater on the mound. And like in the first game a week before, the Blue Bats took the lead first (solo homer by Livan Trujillo), and the Viennese promptly equalized (RBI single by Bennis Salzmann). The Bats then had to counter the Metrostars’ 2-1 lead in the fourth with a 4-run fifth inning (including a 3-run homer from Philipp Brenner). And it continued to wave back and forth. A sac fly by Richie Alzinger and a 2-RBI single by Nate Weatherly tied the score again in the sixth. When the Schwechaters were ahead again in the 8th inning (6:5), they seemed very close to their first win against the Viennese, but they had something against it again. Sammy Hackl drove in the equalizing run in the 9th inning before Felix Dittrich, with strong nerves, scored the walk-off hit for a 7:6 victory.

Afterwards, as I said, the game, which had been paused the week before due to darkness, had to be finished. There – after starts by Duenas and Quinn McKenzie – the strange situation arose that after 7 innings the Metrostars were in the lead 3:2 with only half as many hits as the Blue Bats (2 vs. 4), without a single RBI to have recorded. In other words: Insecurities in the (Blue) Bats defense were coldly exploited, while the actual Bats remained silent. However, after 4:2 thanks to a sac-fly by Peter Ferak, the Schwechaters countered, including with an RBI double from Julio Rojas and some uncertainty from the Viennese team with 4 runs. This in turn opened the dams on the other side. RBI hits by Sammy Hackl and Richie Alzinger, as well as a sac fly by Lars Petracs put the Metrostars back in the lead 7:6. And, as reported, they would have almost taken that lead home if the game-winning out in the 9th inning hadn’t somehow failed at first base – the reason for overtime a week later. And here, thanks to, among other things, a 2-RBI single from Sammy Hackl, 3 runs were scored in the 10th inning, which were no longer touched thanks to concentrated field work (outfield assist from Dittrich for the last out) – 10:7 for the Metrostars.

And the last game of the day – McKenzy against Stefano Giarraputo, who was looking for his second win of the day – initially played out similarly to the others: Schwechater took the lead in the 1st inning (RBI single from Brenner), 3 runs The Viennese responded in the fourth (including an RBI single from Sammy), equalizing the score to 3:3 in the fourth (2-RBI single from Stefan Felix). But it happened during Chance Hicks’ guest appearance on the mound: The Blue Bats brought home 3 runs, to which the Metrostars could no longer find an answer for the first time this double weekend. Thanks to RBI singles from Mo Hackl and Jakob Simonsen, they got within one run and had the tying run on the second in the 9th inning, but ultimately the pitching of reliever Herrera Gonzales was too strong and the Metrostars still had to accept a defeat. Despite this, or thanks to the other two victories, they are now at the top of the BBL table.
