Victor Wembanyama’s Busy Year After NBA Draft: From San Antonio Spurs to Olympic Preparation

Since his draft almost a year ago, Victor Wembanyama has done a lot. Just after signing up with San Antonio at the end of June, the Frenchman participated in the Las Vegas Summer League at the beginning of July. All coming out of a grueling season with Boulogne-Levallois. In the process, however, he skipped the World Cup in Indonesia in September 2023.

“Wemby” wanted to take the time to digest his long 2022-2023 season before attacking his first season with the San Antonio Spurs. He began his preparation at the beginning of October, with the preseason, before jumping into the deep end on October 25 against Dallas, for his first NBA match. The Spurs’ poor record, however, deprived the franchise of playoffs and therefore saw Wembanyama’s season stopped in mid-April, ten weeks before returning to the Blues for the Olympics.

However, this two and a half month break without a match will not be an opportunity to completely cut off basketball for the Frenchman. If a few days of rest are well planned to recharge his batteries and recharge his batteries, Wembanyama should also spend time in Texas, not in San Antonio but in Dallas, to carry out private training and to keep in shape.

Turned towards the French team

The American premises of Comsport, the company of its agents Bouna Ndiaye, who regularly resides in Dallas, and Jérémy Medjana, are based in Dallas. A return to France is obviously planned during this period of almost ten weeks, to spend time with family and possibly meet contractual obligations. In addition to an engagement with Nike, Victor Wembanyama also became a Louis Vuitton ambassador this year.

It is then on Thursday May 16 that Vincent Collet will announce the list for the preparation of the Olympic Games. It should be very broad because the desire of the staff, after the failure of the last World Cup, is to create competition between the players. Obviously, Wembanyama will be there and his place is guaranteed (excluding injury) in the final list of the 12 lucky ones elected to compete in the Olympics at home.

It was only a month later that preparation began, on June 17, at INSEP with the traditional medical tests. The first friendly match will take place on July 3 in Rouen against Turkey, while the Olympic tournament will begin on July 27.
