Van der Poel the big earner, but also surprises in the top 10: these riders won the most prize money in the spring

Cash register, cash register! The best riders of the cycling spring will not only receive eternal fame from their achievements, but also a nice sum of prize money. We made the assessment of the peloton and made some striking observations.

Two more monuments on the list of achievements and 79,500 euros in the bank account.

Mathieu van der Poel can call himself the big earner of the spring – despite a limited number of matches.

His victories in Roubaix (30,000 euros), the Tour of Flanders (20,000 euros) and the E3 (16,000 euros) provided a solid boost to his coffers.

Teammate Jasper Philipsen also earned a nice bonus in terms of prize money. Victories in Milan-San Remo (20,000 euros) and Bruges-De Panne (16,000 euros) earned our compatriot a nice sum. But second place in Paris-Roubaix (22,000 euros) also earned a lot of money.

In third place we find the phenomenon Tadej Pogacar with 41,000 euros in prize money. The Slovenian earned just under half of that on Sunday in Liège (20,000 euros), the rest he cashed in the Italian races.

It is striking that Tim Merlier also farmed excellently with 23,820 euros. This is thanks to his excellent performances in Nokere Koerse, De Panne and the Scheldeprijs.

Also impressive: sixth place for Nils Politt (22,100 euros) and eighth for Luca Mozzato (18,905 euros).

Expensive birds such as Kasper Asgreen (500 euros), Julian Alaphilippe (1,000 euros) and Arnaud De Lie (1,145 euros) provided very little return on investment.

The above calculations include all WorldTour and ProSeries races of the classic spring. Premiums from the organizations – for example for those who reach the Kluisberg first in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne – are not included.

Visma-Lease a Bike not on the podium

When we look at the team totals, it is little surprise that Alpecin-Deceuninck is at the top with 148,435 euros – good for more than 23% of the total prize money distributed.

UAE Team Emirates and Lidl-Trek follow at a considerable distance. Team Visma-Lease a Bike actually misses the podium with a total earnings of 63,350 euros.
