Van der Poel is alone in the lead: this is what the spring stars earned in prize money in the race | Cycling

Whoever wins in the spring not only increases their record, but also their portfolio. We calculated how much the stars of the first part of the racing season earned in the twelve most important one-day WorldTour races to date. You are probably not surprised that Mathieu van der Poel earned the most money. But how much? And was it also a cash register for the Belgians?

Spring ended on Sunday with Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

And it must be said: some riders did very well again.

Not surprisingly, Mathieu van der Poel tops the list in terms of money earned in the twelve WorldTour competitions so far. Due to its lesser importance, we do not include the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. The figures are based on statistics from data company ‘ProCyclingStats’ and only concern what has been earned through the results achieved. Any bonuses, for example for being the first to reach the top of a hill, do not count.

With wins in the E3 Saxo Classic, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, and a second place in Ghent-Wevelgem and a third place in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Van der Poel has had an incredible spring. And that translates into the prize money earned. The world champion pays 84,500 euros.

Jasper Philipsen is a teammate from Alpecin-Deceuninck – the team of the spring? – in second place. Thanks to his victories in Milan-Sanremo and Classic Brugge-De Panne, and his second place in Roubaix and fourth place in Gent-Wevelgem, Philipsen added 60,400 euros to the bank account.

In third place we meet Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian phenomenon only participated in three spring races, but collected a large sum of money. Due to his victories in the Strade Bianche and Liège-Bastogne-Liège and his third place in Milan-San Remo, he earned 41,000 euros in his spring. Or 13,667 euros per rate. For comparison: top earner Van der Poel earned 12,071 euros per match.

Mads Pedersen (34,400 euros) and Nils Politt (22,100 euros) complete the top five.

Striking: Wout van Aert just closes out the top 20. Before his heavy crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen, he collected money in the Omloop (4,000 euros) and the E3 Saxo Classic (4,000 euros). Other Belgians in the list are Jasper Stuyven (10,200 euros), Maxim Van Gils (9,900 euros) and Tim Merlier (8,800 euros).

Not unimportant: the money earned is in principle not for the rider alone. There is a tradition that the prize money within the teams is divided among the riders and staff members.
