The Buffalo Sabres have terminated Don Granato as their coach due to the ongoing lack of playoff appearances.

The Sabres are once again embarking on a coaching search, a situation they are unfortunately familiar with. Granato is now the team’s sixth coach since Lindy Ruff’s firing in the middle of the shortened 2012 season due to the lockout.

I would like convey my gratitude to Don for his contributions to Buffalo and the Sabres organization. He has played a crucial role in the growth of our players and has been a great fit as our coach till date,” stated general manager Kevyn Adams on the team’s website. “However, I have decided to make a change in direction at this juncture. Our goal is to be a consistent competitor and unfortunately, we have not been able to achieve that.”

The Buffalo Sabres have terminated head coach Don Granato’s contract, marking him as the seventh coach to be removed during the longest playoff drought in NHL history, which has currently lasted 13 seasons.

Granato finished his third complete year with the Buffalo team, stepping in temporarily during the pandemic-shortened 2021 season after Ralph Krueger’s termination. The decision is made while Granato, 56, is still under a two-season contract that includes an extension starting next season.Associated Press

The team announced the decision the day following the Sabres’ final game of the season, a 4-2 victory against Tampa Bay. The Sabres ended the season with a record of 39 wins, 37 losses, and 6 ties, and were disqualified from the playoffs last week.

Rasmus Dahlin and Tage Thompson, playing together, had an impressive total of 116 goals, with 47 being Thompson’s best individual season in 2022-23. In his first four seasons in the NHL, Thompson only scored 18 goals. However, an injury to his hand in November resulted in only 29 goals being scored by Thompson in 71 games this year.
His final record in Buffalo is 122 wins, 125 losses, and 27 ties.

Some possible replacements for Granato might be former coach of the St. Louis Blues, Craig Berube, coach of the Sabres’ minor-league team, Seth Appert, and former Sabres captain, Michael Peca. Peca was Appert’s assistant for two seasons in the AHL with Rochester and recently joined the New York Rangers as an assistant coach.
