A total of 426 athletes from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) qualified for the 2024 National Universiadeafter competing in the regional stage in which athletes from Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán and Nayarit participated.

The head of the High Performance Unit, of the Physical Culture Coordination, Quetzalcóatl Oregel, said that The institution will have a presence in 28 of the 30 disciplines called by the National Council of Sports Education.

“We were left out of tennis, which unfortunately is not a very strong sport for us, practically the Universidad Panamericana and the Tecnológico de Monterrey occupied all the places. In bardas football we were left out in both branches, this region is very strong in this discipline and in sport nothing is written, we must prepare better for next year.”

He explained that the results were as predicted and The participation of the men’s basketball team stood out who after five years without qualifying managed to advance to the national competition.

Baseball in the final faced the Autonomous University of Nayarit, which is quite strong, we won by knockout in the fifth inning, 15 runs to zero, and combat sports qualified without a problem. The delegation will be made up of 522 people between athletes, coaches, doctors.”

Regarding the new sports in the competition program, he reported that in kickboxing they will attend with 22 athletes to participate in the three categorieswhile in paddle tennis, where mixed pairs will be competed, men’s and women’s teams go with a full team.

He highlighted that the regional stage was a quite competitive event, since some universities participated in sports where they had not had a presence, such as Michoacán in archery and Colima participated in tochito and rugby.

“Nayarit presented wrestling, judo, fencing teams and some of them are new athletes and there are others who also have a good competitive level. It is being seen that there is development with these new incorporations and that universities are caring about the comprehensive development of all disciplines. I am glad to see that all universities are growing. In the case of Jalisco, 85 percent of the passes stayed here”.

He shared that unlike all previous editions of the national competition, this will be the first time that each institution will have to take care of the lodging, food and transportation expenses of their delegations, so the fact that it is in a nearby headquarters such as Aguascalientes will represent economic savings for the institution.

The National Universiade, which will be hosted by the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes, will be held from May 11 to 28.
