Uncertainty Looms: Will Giannis Antetokounmpo Be Ready for the Playoffs?

Hit in the calf, will Giannis Antetokounmpo be ready for the Playoffs? That’s the question everyone in Milwaukee and elsewhere is asking. The latest update has just fallen: the Freak has a good chance of starting the series against the Pacers… in the infirmary.

Milwaukee and Indiana will face off on Sunday for Game 1 of their first-round series. Sunday is six days away. And six days probably isn’t enough time for Giannis to recover from his calf injury.

In any case, this is what Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Update on an All-NBA star ahead of playoffs:

Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf) is rehabbing daily but there’s some real doubt for his status to begin series vs. Pacers on Sunday, sources say. Although Giannis has rare recovery ability, he’s very much up in the air for Game 1.

“Real doubts” regarding his status for Game 1, “very uncertain” to play. Suffice to say that the Bucks had better prepare to evolve without their leader next weekend.

As a reminder, Giannis injured his calf alone on April 9 against Boston. If the first results were reassuring given that they ruled out any significant injury (particularly to the Achilles tendon), that does not mean that we should take this physical problem lightly. Five years ago, Kevin Durant returned from a calf injury before tearing his Achilles tendon in the NBA Finals. A nightmare scenario that we don’t even want to think about in Milwaukee.

Being one of the greatest NBA competitors, and proving in the past his ability to come back from injury faster than expected (remember the 2021 NBA Finals), Giannis will do everything in his rehabilitation to be ready from the start of the Playoffs. And we therefore cannot completely rule out participation in Game 1.

But at the time of writing, things seem to be off to a bad start, because the Freak is starting from afar.
