“It’s terrible” – Bochum’s Schlotterbeck is making history

Several professionals have already scored an own goal and a hit within the same game. For Keven Schlotterbeck from Bochum, however, the curiosity is nothing special. It was that time again against Heidenheim.
Keven Schlotterbeck seemed heartbroken. He would have loved to have spared himself the headlines about the oddity of the Bochum defender hitting both the wrong and the right goal in the 1-1 (0-0) draw against 1. FC Heidenheim for the second time in a season. “What can I say about it: It’s terrible,” commented the 26-year-old in an interview on Sky.
His equalizer in the 90th minute, which spared his relegation-threatened team another demoralizing setback just nine minutes after his own goal, offered some consolation: “This time we were at least able to turn the game in our direction. This goal could help us in the final spurt of the season.”
A week after the defeat in Cologne, when VfL squandered a 1-0 lead by conceding two goals in stoppage time, the next shock experience seemed imminent despite the change of coach from Thomas Letsch to Heiko Butscher. After a cross from Heidenheim’s Omar Traoré, Schlotterbeck put the ball into his own net, although his team had previously put the guests under a lot of pressure and seemed to be well on the way to the victory they had hoped for. But as on October 27th in the 2-2 draw against Mainz, the defender made up for his mishap and equalized with a header.
Bochum winless for the seventh time in a row
Nevertheless, the change of coach only helped to a limited extent in the hoped-for turnaround. Ultimately, the Revierclub remained winless for the seventh time in a row and has to worry more than ever about staying in the league this season. The gap to the relegation relegation place shrank to one point because the table was 16th. from Mainz won 4-1 against Hoffenheim at the same time.

“After the coaching change, everyone always expects things to happen immediately. That’s why I can understand that some people are disappointed,” commented Butscher, but also pointed to positive aspects of the game: “We’ve had a lot of blows in our necks in the last few weeks. But this team has shown that it lives, that it wants to. We still have everything in our own hands.”

Bochum have already lost a lead nine times this season. This time they were spared a similar experience. Former U-19 coach Butscher couldn’t make a reproach to Schlotterbeck: “Keven is a player you can totally rely on. You only get an own goal like that once in 10 or 15 years. Keven has huge value for us.”

Unlike the Bochum team, the Heidenheim team could live well with the draw. For the promoted team, they will remain in the league as 10th in the table. Almost perfect with an eight-point lead over 16th place: “Today we were mainly challenged on the defensive. Sure, we were lucky to take the lead,” commented Frank Schmidt. But the visiting coach didn’t want to talk about a lucky draw: “Bochum deserved the point. But we also deserve it – and we’re happy to take it with us.”
