Turbulent Days for Union CEO Philippe Bormans: The Christia Burgess Saga

Christia Burgess is finally allowed to play against Anderlecht. All’s well that ends well for the Union, but for CEO Philippe Bormans, it was a turbulent few days.

Philippe Bormans returned to this matter once again in an interview given to Sudpresse. His contacts with the federal prosecutor and other people within the Belgian Football Union were examined. “I am accused of attempted influence by a person, a journalist. I don’t know why or for what reason, because he never contacted me.”

Bormans does not name the person in question, but it is clear that it is Peter Vandenbempt, a journalist from Sporza, who had made strong accusations against the Union and its CEO.

Bormans right in his boots

No case has been opened against him, emphasizes Bormans. “It was frustrating because I couldn’t say anything to defend myself. We had to save all our arguments for the Disciplinary Committee meeting.” But isn’t it true that he used his influence to get Burgess elected, as Vandenbempt suggests?

“On Saturday, I had three different versions: an email from the federal prosecutor, the Union regulations and the online system where Burgess was marked in red. It was normal to try to understand what was happening.”

“I asked Piet Vandendriessche (CEO of the Belgian Football Union, editor’s note) to contact me quickly because I wanted to know who to contact. We didn’t even discuss the subject itself. He told me gave the contact details of the people I could contact. And that’s what I did.”
