Trouble at Signal Iduna Park: Police Investigate Illegal Celebrations on Stadium’s 50th Birthday

Dortmund – On April 2nd, Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion – now Signal Iduna Park – turned 50 years old. BVB and its fans have been celebrating the cradle celebration online for days, but a nasty surprise followed on site on the actual birthday. Now the police are investigating.

Around 10:45 p.m., around 20 people are said to have cracked the lock to the parking lot on Strobelallee directly in front of the stadium and illegally entered the area, as the police announced on Wednesday.

Accordingly, they set off unauthorized fireworks there to mark the anniversary.

A 73-year-old security employee then confronted the group and asked them to leave the property, whereupon he was threatened.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they caught five men between the ages of 20 and 36 and two women (26 and 31). Four of the suspects had already been noticed for violent crimes at football games, and there was even an open arrest warrant against a 30-year-old man.

The police searched the people and their two cars, confiscated pyrotechnic items and balaclavas and issued expulsions.

Criminal proceedings were then initiated for violating the Explosives Act, threats and trespassing.

The next day, a spokesman for Borussia Dortmund confirmed to the German Press Agency that the security guard concerned and a property security employee had now also filed a complaint themselves.

Videos of the allegedly illegal fireworks have been circulating on social networks since late Tuesday evening, and in the past few days BVB and many supporters have published numerous compilations, interviews and homages on the anniversary of the black and yellow temple.

In addition, the official party planning is also in full swing. At the home game on Saturday (6:30 p.m.) against VfB Stuttgart, the Borussia team will wear a special jersey in honor of the arena.
