Top Players Shine, Defending Champion Rublev Falls: ATP Masters in Monte Carlo Update

Defending champion Andrey Rublev lost surprisingly clearly in the second round of the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo on Wednesday afternoon (read here>>>).

His competitors in the top 10 of the world rankings presented themselves much more confidently in their opening game in the first 1000 competition on the European Ashes.

Daniil Medvedev only had to fight against the crowd favorite in the second round after a confident 6:2 in the first set. There the Russian is already behind 1:4, but after five games en suite he is still celebrating the two-set win against the 38-year-old Frenchman.

In the round of 16, Medvedev will now face his Russian friend Karen Khachanov, who eliminated Argentine Fransisco Cerundolo in three sets.

Sinner and Tsitsipas in a hurry

Shooting star Jannik Sinner once again underlines his great form in his first clay court appearance of the year. The South Tyrolean gives Sebastian Kodra no chance with 6:1, 6:2 in 76 minutes. The German Jan-Lennard Struff is waiting in the next round.

Casper Ruud is also back on the road to success after his surprising semi-final exit in Estoril last week. The Norwegian clearly defeated Alejandro Tabilo 6:2, 6:4. Estoril champion Hubert Hurkacz is now waiting for Ruud.

Stefanos Tsitsipas also seems to be coming back in top form. The Greek celebrates an express victory after 64 minutes in his second round against the Argentinian Thomas Martin Etcheverry and only gives up one game in the entire game. In the round of 16, Tsitsipas will now face Alexander Zverev. The German already eliminated Sebastian Ofner the day before.

“Class above me” – That’s what Ofner says about his exit against Zverev
