Tom Pidcock sprints to the Amstel Gold Race

The British cyclist Thomas Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) has won this Sunday the 58th edition of the Amstel Gold Race, which was held over 253.6 kilometers between the Dutch towns of Maastricht and Berg en Terblijt, while the Spanish Pello Bilbao (Bahrain -Victorious) finished ninth.

In a reduced sprint with his escape companions, Pidcock beat everyone to win the first classic of the Ardennes Triptych of 2024 with a time of 5:58:17, with the Swiss Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) and the Belgian Tiesj Benoot (Visma-Lease a Bike) completing the podium of the event.

Meanwhile, the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), recent winner of the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, could not be in the fight to pick up the baton from the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, winner of the ‘beer classic’. ‘ in 2023 and absent in this edition.

The attacks continued from the beginning of the race, although it was not until kilometer 30 when the first successful escape was consolidated, formed by the Belgian Tosh van der Sande (Visma-Lease a Bike), the Dutch Enzo Leijnse (Dsm-Firmenich Postnl), the Austrian Alexander Hajek (BORA-hansgrohe) and the British Zeb Kyffin (Tdt-Unibet Cycling Team).

The four of them managed to enjoy an advantage of almost five minutes and rode together for about 150 kilometers, until the platoon acted and neutralized them. Subsequently, another group of a dozen escapees was formed from which Hirschi, Pidcock, Benoot and the Belgian Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step) jumped out after a few kilometres.

Among them, Pidcock was the fastest to the finish line in Berg en Terblijt and took the title. For his part, the Basque Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) finished as the best Spaniard at the finish line, ninth with the same time as the winner of the race, while Roger Adrià (BORA-hansgrohe) finished fourteenth.

The Amstel Gold Race inaugurates the triptych of the Ardennes 2024, which will continue with the Flecha Balona, ​​next Wednesday, and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège, next Sunday.
