Defending champion Andrej Rublew was surprisingly eliminated from his opening match at the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo on Wednesday. The world number six from Russia had to bow to the Australian Alexei Popyrin 4:6,4:6 after 100 minutes. Rublew won his first and only ATP 1000 title in Monaco last year.
Austria’s doubles finalist from last year, however, already passed the opening hurdle on Tuesday. Sam Weissborn (ATP 50th) defeated the French Ugo Humbert/Fabrice Martin (FRA) alongside local hero Romain Arneodo 7:6(0),7:6(2). The duo, who now meet the French again with Nicolas Mahut/Edouard Roger-Vasselin, are only there thanks to wildcards and were last in the semi-finals in Estoril.
