Three Belgian Cats in the Women’s Euroleague Final: A Historic Showdown in Turkey

Three Belgians for the price of one. It’s historic: three Belgian Cats will compete this Sunday (6 p.m.) in Mersin (Turkey) in the final of the Women’s Euroleague, the most prestigious European club cup.

If we could expect to find Emma Meesseman and Fenerbahçe, title holders, at this stage of the competition, Maxuella Lisowa and Bethy Mununga created a surprise by reaching the final with Villeneuve-d’Ascq.

It had been 20 years since a French club had reached the Euroleague final (Valenciennes was crowned in 2004, with Ann Wauters). Two decades later, another northern club will try to get their hands on the continent’s most coveted trophy.

Leader of the French championship, Villeneuve-d’Ascq was not expected at such a celebration. Arriving on the Turkish coast with the label of Petit Poucet for its first Final Four, the team coached by Rachid Meziane defied the predictions by defeating Prague in the semi-final (84-78). A match during which Maxuella Lisowa compiled 5 points and 4 assists in 14 minutes. Bethy Mununga only stepped on the floor for 4 minutes (2 pts and 1 reb).

A 6th title for Emma Meesseman?

For its part, Fenerbahçe got rid of Mersin (89-80) in a tight Turkish duel which looked like a final before the letter. Emma Meesseman (17 pts, 4 rbs, 6 ass) and her teammates used their experience to emerge against the local team and their lively crowd.

Fener will start as big favorites for the final and the Belgian star could get his hands on his… sixth Euroleague title!
