Thomas Delaney Shines for Anderlecht and Could Extend Stay in Brussels

Thomas Delaney started this Wednesday against Cercle de Bruges, and was one of the most valuable Mauves against an opponent with a very direct game. The Dane establishes himself as a safe bet, and could well extend his stay in Brussels.

Thomas Delaney has a Van Bommel side both on and off the pitch. The eye-catching, sometimes vicious, but finer-than-it-appears style of play; this air of the ideal smiling and charming son-in-law to defuse any situation or to address the press. The Dane is as friendly as he is valuable on the pitch.

Especially against an opponent like Cercle de Bruges. “They’re always a tricky opponent. We fought for 20 minutes, then we found the fault. They’re a difficult team to play against,” smiles Thomas Delaney after the match. “And it’s never a good match to watch (laughs). They have a clear style of play, you shouldn’t expose yourself too much.”

This large 3-0 victory is ideal before facing the Green & Black, Sunday. “It’s true, but we also know that our last away performances were insufficient,” recalls Delaney. “We will have to take both into consideration, and try to finally move on.”

Anderlecht boss… next season too?

The midfield triangle has often been modified this season, and Delaney has long been kept out of it. Brian Riemer, at a press conference, explained: “Thomas had a difficult season, rotten by injuries. He had doubts, and to be honest, I had doubts myself. That’s why he was on the bench,” admits the RSCA coach.

“He never managed to find the rhythm. First the shoulder, then the hamstrings… Every time he approached his best level, Thomas had to start from scratch,” continues Riemer. “But he’s a winner, a leader. He has experience at the highest level and those crucial moments in a season. Thomas Delaney makes others better, and he can guide us in these last 5 games.”

Anderlecht will in any case have to confirm, after having been very criticized in terms of play in these Playoffs so far. “I don’t speak French or Dutch, so I don’t read the reviews and that’s not a bad thing,” jokes Delaney. Loaned by Sevilla FC, he could stay longer if the end of the season goes well.

“Will I learn the language? (he hesitates) I would like to learn French. Dutch, I don’t think it’s that difficult, but I only know how to say one sentence which I won’t say here (laughs) Brussels is a very international city, so it’s not too serious,” concludes the Danish international.
