The World Athletics Federation announced on Wednesday that it will award 50 thousand dollars (around 46 thousand euros) to each gold medal winner in the 48 athletics specialties at the next Paris Olympics, scheduled from 26 July to 11 August. An international federation will therefore award cash prizes to the winning athletes at the Olympics for the first time in the history of the Games. The International Olympic Committee has never provided for cash prizes: the modern Olympics were born 128 years ago as an “amateur” sports event. The president of the Athletics Federation Sebastian Coe said that 2.4 million dollars (2.2 million euros) will be set aside to pay the prizes: the winning relay teams will divide the 50 thousand dollars among the various participants, while prizes for the medals silver and bronze will be expected starting from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The Olympic committees of various countries already provided cash prizes for their medal-winning athletes: at the Tokyo Olympics, CONI, the Italian Olympic Committee, awarded 180 thousand euros gross for Olympic gold, 90 thousand for silver, 60 thousand for bronze . They were among the highest prizes in European countries, but not in the Italian sporting scene: according to newspaper reports, for winning the European football championship in 2021 each player of the Italian national team received a prize of 250 thousand euros.
