The Unending MVP Debate: Exhausting for Players and Fans Alike

Debates about individual awards in general and the MVP in particular are one of the topics that usually dominate conversations throughout the season. Practically from the first week of competition, much of the NBA content revolves around this topic, which seems to become increasingly hostile and monopolize almost any narrative. To the point where it is exhausting even for the players themselves.

Nikola Jokic already has two awards under his belt, and seems to be heading for the third. But when asked about it, far from defending his candidacy, he seemed a little overwhelmed, and acknowledged that, although he believes that he deserves it, others could also receive it.

“I think the whole MVP conversation has gotten out of control,” he said in a statement to the insider of the Nuggets Harrison Wind. “I think I have played at a good level, but there are several players who deserve the award.”

Debates about this award are, certainly, inevitable. Since there is no fixed criterion, everyone can cling to the narrative that interests them to defend their player, but sometimes we reach a point of discrediting other superstars that is impossible not to tire of. Suddenly, it turns out that Embiid would average 5 points per game if he didn’t get free throws, Luka Doncic hasn’t passed a ball since his time at Real Madrid, and Jokic has the athleticism of Brendan Fraser in The Wale.

Nikola in particular has recently suffered this type of meaningless attacks, with Gilbert Arenas, whom God confuse, claiming that he was the worst MVP of all time, and last year the debate regarding whether he or Embiid deserved it came to become quite toxic. And unfortunately, it does not seem that these words on his part are going to change it.
