The Uncertain Future of the Minnesota Timberwolves: Ownership Drama and Potential Roster Changes

The future of the Minnesota Timberwolves is uncertain. Not necessarily on the field, where players Chris Finch achieved one of the greatest seasons in the history of the franchise, just that. But rather behind the scenes. It’s been three years since Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez began buying the organization from Glen Taylor. An operation which was to be completed in recent weeks but which was ultimately canceled and will undoubtedly have to be settled in court.

Difficult to know who will be or will be the next owners of the Wolves, which obviously leads to other questions (which direction? What market? etc.) Taylor is said to have vetoed it due to late payment. Some believe that the billionaire has changed his mind now that the team is winning and therefore… increasing in value. But Adrian Wojnarowski’s sources another potential reason for his refusal to give up the baby to Lore and A-Rod.

The Wolves are no longer for sale, big failure for A-Rod

Documents shared with Taylor, the NBA and a private group showed a significant drop in roster payroll for the upcoming season. The Wolves are now set to have the fourth most expensive squad in the league in 2024-2025, with more than 25 million in taxes to pay. And yet, in the projections of the failed owners, the score decreased significantly, with even a redistribution estimated at $6.5 million since the franchise fully anticipated ending up below the Luxury Tax threshold.

Such savings are only possible if the leaders considered the transfer of a massive contract, namely one of the three “maximums” currently reserved for the three stars of the team. Anthony Edwards seems untouchable given his rise but this therefore implies that Karl-Anthony Towns or Rudy Gobert could have been traded during the offseason.

The Frenchman’s value has skyrocketed following his very good season. He is one of the favorites in DPOY, if not the favorite, and he is one of the pillars of this team’s success. Towns has also been very good but the last few weeks have shown that the Timberwolves can also win games without him with the emergence of Naz Reid. Difficult to know which of the two was approached for a possible trade.

Then these are just assumptions based on financial projections. None of the parties involved wanted to comment at this time.
