Oldenburg/Vechta – This Saturday (8 p.m., Rasta Dome) the northwest rivals Rasta Vechta and EWE Baskets Oldenburg will face each other in the derby in the Basketball Bundesliga for only the twelfth time. While the Oldenburgers have played in the upper house since 2000, their neighbor 60 kilometers to the south appeared in the Bundesliga for the first time in 2013. After several relegations and promotions, Rasta is now in the top division for the fourth time. A look back at some of the past duels:

November 23, 2013: The first duel between the two in the Bundesliga is a pretty clear affair. Oldenburg wins the home game 87:74. The top scorer of the game, Dirk Mädrich (27 points), is a Rasta activist. He later played one season for Oldenburg (2016/17) before playing again for Vechta (2017/18 – 2nd league). 22-year-old Kevin Smit, who currently plays for Rasta Vechta II in the 2nd league, gets around one and a half minutes of playing time on the Oldenburg side, but remains without a point. To date, that 2013/14 season is the only one in which the four northwest teams Oldenburg, Vechta, Artland Dragons Quakenbrück and Eisbären Bremerhaven all play in the Bundesliga.

March 18, 2017: Vechta is relegated at the end of the season with only two wins. One of them was achieved that day in their own hall against their northern neighbors Oldenburg (89:76), Devin Searcy was the hosts’ best scorer with 18 points. The Baskets and coach Mladen Drijencic later reach the playoff final and become runner-up behind Bamberg.

March 8, 2020: There is a strange atmosphere among the 6,200 spectators in the large (and sold out) EWE Arena. The corona virus has reached Germany, and many people were wondering on that Sunday afternoon whether and for how long events of this kind would continue. The answer in retrospect: Oldenburg’s 83:76 victory is the last game of the regular season for both teams. A few days later comes the lockdown and the associated cancellation of the main round season. In June, the German champions will be played at a final tournament with ten teams in Munich – without spectators and under strict hygiene rules. Oldenburg made it to the semi-finals, Vechta – then coached by Pedro Calles – was eliminated in the preliminary round.

December 30, 2020: In the empty Rasta Dome (spectators are not yet allowed back in), Oldenburg narrowly wins 82:80 shortly before the turn of the year. Nathan Boothe is the Baskets’ best scorer with 23 points, while Josh Young scores the most points for Rasta (13). Vechta will be looked after by Thomas Päch in the game. But the coach has to leave before the end of the season, at the end of the season Rasta will be relegated to the second league as bottom of the table.

November 18, 2023: Oldenburg’s coach Calles suffered a clear 67:85 home defeat with the Baskets against his former team from Vechta. Tommy Kuhse is the best scorer for the guests with 27 points.
