The second-hand market doubles the volume of new ones and grows 2.7% in the first quarter |

Sales of used passenger cars and SUVs rose 2.7% in the first quarter, registering a total of 482,802 units, according to data from MSI for the sector employers Ganvam (official and independent distributors) and Faconauto (dealers). In this way, until March for every new vehicle, two used ones were sold. However, during last month, the seasonal effect of Easter also affected the second-hand market which, following the trend of the new market, fell by 12.3%, reaching 158,694 units.

In an analysis by channel, the data shows how operations with used cars from rent a car cushioned the fall in the second-hand market during the last month, being the only channel that showed a positive sign. In this way, its sales grew by almost 11% in March, reaching 10,622 units, accumulating an increase of 6.2% in the first quarter. For its part, used sales from rental operators – which, although they fell 2.8% last month – accumulated an increase of 22.7% in the first quarter. This increase in operations with used vehicles from the fleet explains why sales of models up to five years old have grown by more than 4% so far this year and now account for 26.4% of the market.

However, the bulk of second-hand passenger car operations continue to be concentrated in models over 15 years old. In this way, although they fell 10.2% last month, they continue to account for more than 40% of sales, accumulating a volume of 195,836 units at the end of the first quarter, 6.4% more. This is almost two points more than in the same period last year, highlighting the difficulties that citizens have in accessing zero mobility and low emissions solutions.
