The Saudi Arabian Basketball League: A Look at the Top Professional Division in Saudi Arabia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Saudi Arabian Basketball League, also known as the Saudi Basketball League, is the top professional basketball division in Saudi Arabia. The tournament, organized by the Saudi Arabian Basketball Federation, is under the aegis of FIBA Asia. The competition is held annually, from October to May, and sees the participation of 12 teams[1].

The first edition of the championship was played in the 1976-1977 season and since that first edition the competition has never been suspended. The team that has won the most editions is Ohod Medina, which has been crowned champion of Saudi Arabia twenty times.[2].

Until the 2020-2021 season the competition is divided into two phases, first a regular season was played in which all the teams clash twice each to determine a final ranking. At the end of the first phase the top six teams were admitted to the play-offs, with the two teams finishing first and second in the regular season directly admitted to the semi-finals. In the play-offs, the teams competed in best-of-three series in all rounds, determining the national champion after the final series.[3]

From the 2021-2022 season the competition takes place with the single Italian round formula, with the twelve teams competing in two matches against every other opponent in the championship, to determine the final ranking at the end of the twenty-two days. The team at the top of the table is named national champion, while the bottom two in the category are relegated to Saudi Division I [4].
