The regional derby, “a special match”: this is how the Avilés-Marino match was experienced

“Facing Marino is always special. Despite the regional rivalry, they are a cool team to face, I have always liked them.” Despite the short distance that separates Miramar from Suárez Puerta, just over 15 kilometers, the fans of both teams do not experience the duel with a staunch rivalry. “We have always gotten along well. Our great rivalry is with Langreo, we really don’t like them, but with Marino there are no problems,” says Mario Rodríguez, one of the hundreds of fans who were seen in the fan zone installed by the club in the run-up to the match.

“Logically we don’t want them to beat us or pass us by, but Marino has always generated sympathy. They are a special team. Many of the players who have been here have ended up playing there,” says Sergio García, who hopes that both teams can ensure permanence as soon as possible. “It is already practically impossible for us to get into the play-off, so I hope we manage to stay without suffering. I wish Marino the same, going to Miramar is always a nice trip and next year I want to return,” he says.

Although Gozo fans were barely seen in the Suárez Puerta fan zone, in the run-up to the match many of them were queuing at the Aviles club store to get their tickets. “Against Avilés it is always a good idea to play. As the people are all from the region, a different atmosphere is generated from other games,” says Laura Vázquez, a Marinista fan who usually visits Suárez Puerta “although at home it is better that they not know, who are very Marino”. Miguel Llano, for his part, hopes that this end of the season will be calm for the Gozoniegos and achieve, one more year, the desired permanence. “This season we have deserved more. We have had a thousand injuries, but even so we continue fighting for salvation. I hope that football smiles on us and does not give us a tragic end,” says the Luanquín, who trusts in the work of Sergio Sánchez, His trainer.
