The Potential Roadblocks in Extending Mikal Bridges’ Contract for the Nets: Donovan Mitchell’s Possible Impact

The string of building around Mikal Bridges could end up complicating things for the Nets. This summer the forward is eligible to receive a contract extension worth around $113 million over three years. A figure that the franchise would be interested in putting on the table, but which, according to Brian Lewis in the podcast HoopsHype, the player would want to overcome. For which he would have to wait until he leaves free agency in the summer of 2025.

This points to the offseason 2025 as the point on which to pivot, with players like Bridges, Ben Simmons, Cam Thomas or Dorian Finney-Smith ending their contract. The Nets want to reach that summer with healthy accounts to start a project from free agency, but Donovan Mitchell could ruin everything.

Lewis, a journalist who covers Nets news for the New York Post, thinks that if there is a possibility that Mitchell asks for a transfer or the Cavaliers want to transfer him before his contract ends next year, Brooklyn will go for him. As exchange pieces they have the aforementioned players, in addition to seven transferable first rounds. Apparently, Mikal Bridges continues to be non-transferable.
