The Loneliness of Santi Aldama: The Last Spaniard Standing in the NBA

Santi Aldama has been left alone in the NBA. The Canarian is practically the last Spaniard left in the best league in the world, since although Usman Garuba must also be counted, the Madrid native almost ‘does not count’.

Unlike the Memphis Grizzlies, whose third year has been one of progression and has improved in all statistics, Garuba has not made a place for himself in the NBA and his numbers are very poor. Throughout the 2023-24 campaign, Garuba has taken the court seven times, accumulating 20 minutes, 3 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocks. Or what is the same, an average of 0.4 points, 1.1 rebounds, 0.2 assists and 0.4 blocks.

Very poor numbers that have nothing to do with what he has achieved with the Warriors affiliate. Garuba dominates the G League with 12.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists on averagea competition that, unfortunately for him, seems to be his only possible destination if he wants to continue in the United States.

A new contract that changes nothing

The Madrid interior was recently in the news for a ‘promotion’. The Golden State Warriors changed his dual contract, with which he can play with both the affiliate and the Santa Cruz Warriors, so that he could play with the team in the title playoffs. What was initially good news became an anecdote, since the Warriors went home at the first opportunity and everything became a dead letter.

Garuba earned a total of $11,608 for that game against the Sacramento Kings, but his new contractual condition does not change anything for the immediate future.

The Warriors have priority over him, with the possibility of even offering him a new contract of up to four seasons with an initial salary of 2.4 million. All this would have to happen before July 14, at which point he will become an unrestricted free agent if the Warriors do not prevent it…and Garuba may be a beneficiary of the circumstances. The Golden State dynasty is over and reconstruction is coming in the Bay Area, so Garuba’s continuity cannot be ruled out. But is it really what is best for the player? It has become more than clear that he has no real options to enter the rotation and his tag as a young player, he is still 22 years old but they have not been particularly well exploited, is ending, so it may be that – this summer – his return to Europe.
