Anderson is expected to remain with the league in some capacity, and his job shift will eliminate the nepotism rules that prevented the NFL from hiring his son, Derek, as an official last year.
The NFL has yet to officially announce Anderson’s choice or designate a substitute. According to sources, the league has expressed a preference for having ex-coaches like Fewell in their rulings and coaching boards. In 2023, they discreetly recruited long-time assistant coach George Stewart to act as vice president for instruction and progress.
Anderson, who stepped down as a referee in 2019, was initially hired as the senior vice president of training and development for the officiating department. According to the original plan, he was supposed to work with Perry Fewell and Al Riveron to oversee specific aspects of the department. However, Anderson eventually took on the top leadership role informally. Riveron left his full-time position in 2021, but Fewell is expected to remain in his position.
According to sources, Walt Anderson, the head of NFL officiating, will be stepping down as part of a larger restructuring within the league’s officiating department. This was confirmed on Thursday by ESPN’s sources.
