The Insight of Kevin Mirallas on the Belgian Pro League Playoffs

Kevin Mirallas may be very busy at Eindracht Aalst, but he follows the D1A closely. The turnaround at the top of the ranking? He told us about it.

Last Sunday, RSC Anderlecht for the first time this season overtook Union Saint-Gilloise and took the lead in the standings. The Playoffs are completely relaunched, and for Kevin Mirallas, it wasn’t really a surprise. “I can’t say I was shocked,” he tells us.

“I suspected that the Union would not remain as efficient until the end of the championship. This has already been seen in the past in PO1. That does not take away from the fact that they are having a very good season, with a Cup final, a very good run in Europe”, underlines the ex-Diable Rouge (60 caps, 10 goals).

“So yes, they are cracking in these first three Playoff matches. But I am not worried about them and I am not burying them. Anderlecht suffered to beat them while they are in a bad situation,” continues Mirallas, who even sees this blow to the head last Sunday as potentially saving.

Mirallas is not a fan of the Playoffs

“It was going to be difficult for the Union to have this in mind all the time: now, they are sort of outsiders, hunters, and that will do them a lot of good,” he believes. “I wouldn’t rule out, moreover, Genk and Bruges: Genk has a very good team and plays good football, and the Club plays liberated, but we have already seen that in the Playoffs, it can go far.”

RSC Anderlecht, leader, however, does not impress the former Antwerp player. “We can’t say that they have an incredible game. But they have teamwork, they took a lot of points with a goal difference,” admits Mirallas. “I would say it’s their bench that worries me.”

Thorgan Hazard’s injury, in this regard, can hurt a lot. “Of course a player like Thorgan can make the difference in the Playoffs. The problem is that to replace him, you have Amuzu… but starting him takes away that option off the bench while we know that this is Francis Amuzu’s strength.”

An exciting end to the season which is coming, therefore, but of which Kevin Mirallas is not a big fan. “I am anti-Playoffs, that’s clear. We are the only ones, in the championships that count, let’s say, to continue with this system. In Greece, they have Playoffs, but without division of points”, regrets the sports director of Eendracht Aalst.

“It’s all a question of television rights. The Playoffs bring more money, that’s a fact. But in the end, several teams enter this top 6 without any chance or even desire to go for the title anyway, like the Circle”, concludes Mirallas.
