Heidelberg’s managing director Matthias Lautenschläger tells the “Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung”: “As always, there are supporters and opponents of this decision. Finally, as a Heidelberg club, we go to Mannheim, another city, for a game. However, most fans perceive this as a high point. Season ticket holders in particular are looking forward to being able to watch a basketball game in the SAP Arena. The fact is: We are Heidelbergers and we remain Heidelbergers. Nevertheless, we want to increase our awareness beyond the city limits.”

For the majority of the players, playing in front of 10,000 spectators will be a completely new experience. That’s why those responsible for the Academics came up with a trick.

Lautenschläger reveals: “I agreed with Jennifer Kettemann that our players can watch the Bundesliga game against Melsungen inside the arena. To get a feel for it, to get used to the dimensions.”

Kettemann is the managing director of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen handball club. The club is currently having its own problems, but Kettemann stood by her word – the basketball players traveled there last Thursday and experienced the Lions’ 23:38 defeat first hand.

National player Juri Knorr (23) scored four goals.

The Academics then posted a photo of their players in the SAP Arena on Instagram. You can see it – Heidelberg professional Paul Zipser (30) with his baby son Luke (born in February) in front of his chest. To protect the little one from the noise, Zipser put headphones on him.

Incidentally, the SAP Arena will only be ready for the big game shortly before it opens to fans on Sunday.
