The end of an era is approaching at FC Bayern. Goalkeeper legend Manuel Neuer is in the late autumn of his career. As of now, the coming season could be his last. In November, the keeper extended his contract again by another year until 2025.
After Neuer broke his leg while skiing at the end of 2022, many had expected an abrupt end to his career, but the veteran has impressively fought his way back to his usual support. Nevertheless, it is clear to the Bayern bosses that the now 38-year-old is not getting any younger.
It is undisputed that the departure of the five-time world goalkeeper will leave a huge gap. And the transition phase could be difficult. Remember the turbulent years that followed the Kahn era: Back then, Michael Rensing and Thomas Kraft were in goal.

The goalkeeper successor has been an issue at Säbener Straße for a long time. Already in 2020, Alexander Nübel was appointed as the designated new heir until 2025. Like the current number one, he came from Schalke 04.
After a two-year stint at AS Monaco, the Munich team loaned the 27-year-old to VfB Stuttgart at the start of the season. Nübel was able to convince the Swabians, so FC Bayern announced a contract extension until 2029 a few days ago.

Nübel’s contract depends on Neuer
How “Sky” reports, Nübel will definitely continue to look after the VfB goal in the coming season. The Swabians will have to pay a loan fee for this.
In Stuttgart they hope that the 27-year-old will stay beyond the season until 2026. Manuel Neuer could fulfill this wish. If he decides to stay with Munich for another season, Nübel would stay at VfB even longer.
In this case, according to Sky, the new successor’s contract would automatically be extended by another year until 2030.
But if Neuer plans to end his career as early as 2025, Bayern could bring Nübel back for free next year, as “Sky” reports. The record champions have to adhere to a set deadline.
Both clubs should be satisfied with the solution. VfB can keep its goalkeeper for the time being, who plays a key role in Stuttgart’s surprise success.
In the Bundesliga he kept a clean slate nine times. Only Leverkusen’s Lukáš Hrádecký was able to keep his box clean more often.
Bayern board member Max Eberl is also pleased: “He has developed excellently in recent years and is one of the best German goalkeepers. At VfB Stuttgart he can continue to gain match practice at a high level.”
If they qualify for the Champions League, Nübel can reap the rewards of their success with VfB next season. Match practice in the premier class for the future number one should also be welcomed in Munich.
