The Future of Nick Woltemade: Decision Time for the Werder Attacker

Moving days for Nick Woltemade: The Werder attacker impressed with the U21s, missed a chance against Wolfsburg – and is immediately on the verge of a future-oriented decision.

Where does Nick Woltemade’s path lead? The only thing that is certain is that Bremen’s U-21 national striker will stay in the Bundesliga. IMAGO/Jan Huebner

Nick Woltemade himself had already been asked about the topic during the week – and at the weekend there was further reason to inquire about his personal situation, especially when it comes to shaping the future. On Tuesday, after his eye-catching starting eleven debut for the German U-21 national team, the Bremen professional said in the locker room at the Leuna-Chemie Stadium in Halle about a possible Werder stay: “I have always emphasized that it is important for me to stand on the pitch. And then we’ll see…”

On Saturday, Woltemade was in Bremen’s starting eleven against Wolfsburg for the sixth time this Bundesliga season – and could have turned the 2-0 defeat in a different direction with his finish, defused by VfL keeper Pavao Pervan, when the score was 0-0 can. Which is why the attacker was once again talked about in the catacombs of the Weser Stadium, but this time he didn’t have a say himself. Captain Marco Friedl said: “The ball has to be in.”

Woltemade’s choice: Werder or three alternatives

Other people in charge chose more diplomatic tones, such as Clemens Fritz (“You have to say, the keeper did really well”) – at the same time, the head of professional football also took a position on Woltemade’s possible future prospects at Osterdeich: “Of course we wish that he chooses Werder.” This is currently still in question because the Bremen homegrown player’s contract is expiring – and other interested parties have long been intensively considering a free transfer signing in the summer.

One thing is now certain: Woltemade’s future lies in the Bundesliga. In addition to Werder, which is currently pushing ahead with efforts to extend the contract, there are still three options remaining. There is interest from 1899 Hoffenheim, which was the first to be reported Bild reported. Loud Sky VfB Stuttgart is also considering a commitment from Bremen. Borussia Mönchengladbach would also be a possible buyer for the 1.98 meter man.

Werner advocates for Woltemade to stay

In any case, his current coach Ole Werner confirmed once again on Saturday that he would “very much like to continue working” with the U-21 national striker: “That has been communicated very clearly to him for a very long time,” said the 35-year-old: “He “He’s getting more and more into his rhythm with us and is showing in many ways what sets him apart – but he’s still missing a little something.” This season, Woltemade has not played a goal in 26 appearances. We should work on this together if Werner has his way: “But he has to decide.” Woltemade’s choice is still pending – it should now be made as soon as possible.
