The Evolution of Basketball: From Invention to International Competition

History

Basketball was invented by James W. Naismith to keep his students in shape during the winter. In December 1891, the teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield (United States) searched for an indoor sport and many of the rules of the game he created remain in force today. The first international matches were held in the 1920s, and the first world championship took place in the 1950s.

Rules

Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five members on a covered rectangular court. Players control the ball with their hands and score points by throwing it through a hoop suspended 3.05 meters above the ground. Olympic basketball games are divided into four quarters of 10 minutes each. Players switch from attack to defense and must demonstrate resistance, agility and, of course, many skills on the court.
