RIETI – The situation is getting worse. And what says it is not the words from the streets of a small provincial city like Rieti, but the facts that, day after day, are discovered relating to the weekends of fights and attacks that have been characterizing Rieti weekends for at least two months. An unprecedented escalation of violence which has been affecting the city of Rieti for weeks with fights between gangs of young people – all aged between 15 and 18 years of age – during the weekends. Added to the brawls are gratuitous damage to cars parked in the historic center and various criminal episodes, even with injured people having to seek treatment in the emergency room of the de Lellis hospital.
All of this, as we already anticipated yesterday, ended up at the center of a worried meeting that took place at the police station in recent days. In particular, according to what has been emerging in the last few hours from the ongoing investigations by the Police and Carabinieri, but above all from the circulation of videos on social networks, the spread of brass knuckles, knives, sticks among young Rieti people involved in the latest episodes of violence is worrying. and stinging sprays. The growing diffusion of narcotics also fits into this context, certified by a significant increase in seizures, complaints and arrests for drug dealing.
But the news of the day that emerged from the investigators – after the brass knuckles, the baseball bats and the stinging sprays – is the appearance in the latest brawl, certified by some very young injured people who ended up in hospital and by the testimonies collected, of a taser completely identical to the one used by the police force, so much so that the hypothesis has spread that one of the young people may have taken it secretly from some family member who works in the police force. The investigators, meanwhile, in addition to the videos from the Municipality’s surveillance cameras, have also seized those from the private cameras that are outside some premises in the historic center, in particular those around Largo Alfani, a gathering place for hundreds of young and very young people on weekends and where it would all start from.
Detailed information on the matter has also been collected by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rieti which is pushing for full light to be shed on the matter. Another detail is also emerging, parallel but connected, relating to the insufficiency of police, carabinieri and finance patrols on duty at night on weekends. In fact, only one. A problem about which the Prefecture should also shine a light.
