The End of an Era: FC Bayern Misses Out on German Championship for the first time since 2012, Philipp Lahm reflects on the club’s development

For the first time since 2012, FC Bayern will not be German champions this season. For Philipp Lahm, this is the result of a long development.

“The entire situation at FC Bayern has not been easy in recent years. Continuity at all levels is extremely important. That wasn’t there: no stability, no peace. There has been unrest for years – from the management to the coach,” said the former Bayern captain in Bild am Sonntag.

“Many transfers were made that were not successful,” continued Lahm. He can imagine that order will be restored under the new sports director Max Eberl. “But he wouldn’t put his hand in the fire – the recent past was too fast-moving for that.”

“Now, at the very end, things are starting to come together: Neuer, de Ligt, Dier, Kimmich, Goretzka, Musiala and Kane are on the field in every important game. That’s seven players plus Sané, if he’s fit, who are set. Far too little work has been done on this. “No team can be created like that,” complained Lahm.

He did not want to explicitly give Thomas Tuchel himself responsibility for this. Nevertheless, he criticized the coach, at least indirectly, for his treatment of Joshua Kimmich.

Tuchel publicly questioned his role as a six or “holding six” before the start of the season. Kimmich now often plays full-back.

“A club must not allow any doubts to arise about its important players,” said Lahm. “I felt that back then, I was never doubted. That got me through phases when things weren’t going so well. That makes it easier to take on a leadership role.”
