The Debut of Milan Softball: A Look Back at 5 Years of Activity and the Quest for A2

With Serie A baseball having seen its debut postponed, all eyes will be on the debut of the girls’ first softball team over the weekend. The season will open on Sunday at Kennedino with the match against the Sharks of Cernusco sul Naviglio, valid for the first day of the Serie B softball championship. Rayner Ramirez Martinez’s girls will attempt to attack the promotion playoffs for the sixth time, after having come close to them 4 times. The team was set up in 2019 to give an outlet to the girls in our youth softball sector who finally, after twenty years of activity, managed to have a supply chain capable of feeding a senior team. A team that is now made up almost entirely of players who have reached their sporting maturity in our club.

For this reason it is appropriate to take stock of these 5 years of activity, which in any case have almost always seen us play championships as protagonists and competitive until the end. The year in which the most matches were played was the last with 24 matches played, in which Milan softball obtained 21 victories and three defeats, scoring 263 points and conceding 93. In the year of the pandemic, 2020 Only played 5 games of which only 2 were won. With 70 points scored and 39 conceded, it was the worst result obtained by the team, which overall played 74 games in the championships played, winning 59, losing 15, totaling 846 points against 355 conceded.

The team we played the most matches with was Sannazzaro, 13 games of which one lost. The teams we have faced over the years, in addition to Sannazzaro, have been Bergamo 4 times, Bovisio 12, Brescia 8, Bulls 3, Cabs 8, Malnate 8, Lodi 1, Parma 4, Settimo 2 and Sharks 11. The teams we have faced a negative balance are Bovisio, who beat us 7 times out of 12, and Bulls Rescaldina who beat us 2 times out of 3.

These are the most significant team statistics: batting average 0.368, defense average 0.929. In 74 games played, 45 players were used including 13 pitchers and 9 catchers. At an individual statistical level in these 5 years the following data emerged: Polce 74 games played (the only one always present), Pizzi 72, I. Varsi 71. These three athletes played in all 5 championships played, together with Tatiana Valverde, which however we will not have available this year as she has moved abroad.

At an individual level, Polce is the leader in innings with 224, followed by I. Varsi 196 and Pizzi 188. In runs scored, Polce 114, Pizzi 94, I. Varsi 88. Valid serves: Polce 89, I. Varsi 80 (by of which 24 doubles), Pizzi 74 (of which 7 triples). Runs batted at home: I. Varsi 79, Pizzi 70, Tesini 57. Stolen bases: Polce 54, Bellettati 30, Pizzi 26. The processing of this data was done by Olimpia Monda, thanks to its precious work of classifying all the matches played so far.

And the great challenge to get to A2 begins on Sunday. Thanks to the return of Sabrina Monti and Camilla Giamminola, who played on loan in the higher categories, in addition to the precious addition of Federica Baule from A1, the Milan girls can really do it. The challenge against Cernusco will already provide significant answers.
