The chronicle of how Oviedo’s triumph against Elche was built: the most shouted victory was cooked in the middle

A very repeated saying in marathons is that they are 30 kilometers of legs, 10 of head and 2 of heart. If the theory had to be adapted to the marathon Second Division, it could be summarized in that for 30 days it is a game (legs and head) and from then on you have to hold on to anything (heart). The teams reach April in reserve due to a grueling schedule and only those who know how to reinforce their virtues and expertly navigate their defects succeed. Oviedo, seen in Elche, has reasons to dream of a happy ending: he has plenty of heart.

It was D-day. And the team triumphed. It was the Oviedo minus Carrión of the Catalan’s time on the bench. Which leads to a series of conclusions. The most direct: that if the team manages to expand records it will be even more dangerous.

It was Oviedo minus Carrión because it deliberately dispensed with its usual associative game. Merit of Elche? It may be, but in reality that’s how the coach had trained during the week and that’s how he expressed it on the field. The blues only enjoyed 30% of the possession, a striking figure in a team that averages 54.6% ball control, one of the highest in the category. The victory is explained with some proper names. Like Alemão, winner against rival centre-backs, whom he won in six duels. Like Leo Román, six interventions, the highest number of the season. But there was a darker job, less visible to the fan, that served to cement the triumph.

If Oviedo wanted to leave Elche smiling, they had to apply themselves in the middle. Giving the ball to Elche carried many risks, especially if Beccacece’s team found free men inside. There the work of Luismi and Colombatto stood out, but also of Seoane who left his tuxedo in the closet to show off his work overalls.

The three led – along with Bretones – Oviedo in recoveries: 8 Colombatto, 7 Luismi and 6 Seoane. And in the melee: The one with the helmet won 7 duels, the Argentine and the Madrid player, 5. But above the cold statistics, the fact that Elche’s inside men did not shine and those outside rarely received free balls . It was a different Oviedo, as the protagonists themselves recognize. Alien to his most usual style, although tremendously competitive. In fact, it is the game with the least ball with Carrión on the bench and the second with a lowest figure of the season, only surpassed by the 27% possession shown against Levante in the first round, even with Cervera at the controls.

The effectiveness of the proposal is perceived in other details. For example, it was the second game with the fewest completed passes in the final third of the field in the entire season. And even though things took place far from Dituro’s area, Oviedo tested the Argentine on four occasions, some as clear as the one-on-one save against Alemão or a semi-miss shot by Masca. The ball belonged to Elche, the scares belonged to Carrión’s team.

Oviedo, pushed by a union midfield, adds new weapons to a finale that is presumed to be exciting. Now that every detail counts, Carrión’s team wants to go one step further. Elche’s victory teaches new paths.
